Artificial Intelligence (AI) driven customised orthodontics is the future

Vandana KatyalBOSS News

AI can help deliver orthodontic treatments predictably and in patient-friendly ways. Latest technologies combined with customised aligner-based orthodontics can help set your practice apart and improve your case acceptance.

The Future of Orthodontics is no longer driven by appliances but by Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is now available for orthodontic diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment monitoring. It is the automated extension of tele-dentistry which has been used in orthodontics since the 1990s (Estai et al 2018). AI technology use big data sets and computer programmers to teach it to recognise whether a condition is true or false.

AI can be used to monitor treatment progress and track it against the proposed treatment plan and tooth movements. One of the current ways of incorporating this in your orthodontic practice is to use Dental Monitoring. Our internal clinical practice data from CCC Smiles in 2017 (n=125) shows on average AI technology has saved us 25% in number of appointments scheduled for those patients in comprehensive orthodontic treatment. Interestingly, there was no reduction in the number of appointments per patient for limited orthodontic treatments ranging from 3-9 months and an 15% increase in appointments scheduled for patient with fixed appliances! This study is a pilot and now ongoing for future publication.

Do orthodontic treatments finish faster with AI? Treatment times depend on a number of factors and all virtual treatment monitoring detects is progress, breakages and aligner fit (tracking) against the proposed treatment plan. If all other factors are favourable, we should see a reduction in aligner unseats and be able to assess breakages quickly. Our pilot data shows aligner patients are more compliant with prescribed wear time when AI technologies are used – the compliance rose from 50% to 90%. This shows that we should be f

inishing treatments earlier and more predictably. This is yet to be shown in a clinical trial.

Final Words Those embracing the most innovative new time-saving and patient-friendly appliances and technologies today are likely to stay ahead of Direct-To-Consumer business models, or be able to work in collaboration with various DTC orthodontic business models. As much as everything is heading virtual, we still need a thorough patient’s clinical exam and hence traditional brick-and-mortar orthodontic practices are still here to stay. Our practices can provide not just “mail-order treatments” but also an ethical doctor who is bound by duty and care for the patient they treat!

What People Are Saying

  • Having always steered away from clear aligners and only stuck with fixed braces, I’ve finally decided to give aligners a go this year. BOSS is extremely practical, informative and backed up by heaps of research. Dr. V is a great mentor, she’s always helpful and truthful. The team at BOSS and CCC smiles are just amazing, always there to help you whenever you need, even if it was a question that’s be repetitively asked many many times =p. I would highly recommend BOSS to anyone who wishes to start their journey in digital orthodontics. With Dr. V and her team behind me, my confidence level is soooo much higher and I feel like I am delivering my treatment to a higher standard and overall making me a better clinician. Thank you Dr. V!!

  • I joined BOSS in 2018 for the full year, and the wealth of knowledge that Vandana shares is immeasurable! This course is perfect for absolute beginners and also those with more experience, and Vandana caters it perfectly for the whole group. All her information is evidence based and very relatable for general dentists, giving you information that those “generic” 1-3 day clear aligner courses cannot give you. BOSS is a very comprehensive course. I highly recommend it, I plan to join BOSS again!

  • Since I have joined the postgraduate diploma in orthodontics I have noticed all the applied practical learning/knowledge on my patients and I am only half way through the year. Dr Vandana is a genuine educator. She goes way beyond to simplify every lecture and I really like her evidence based information and that is available for us 24/7. Her webinars helped a lot for busy dentist and loved the feedback we get in the one on one sessions with our cases. It make us think every step of the way. But the best thing I like is to see she is giving back to the community and her association with Smile train In helping children with cleft palate is just beyond words. Thank you so much for being nice and approachable.

  • Dr Katyal’s courses are always very practical, interactive and based on up-to-date evidence. I have completed other orthodontic courses and I have found the structure and organisation of BOSS to be superior. Whilst Dr Katyal is very encouraging of GP dentists doing orthodontic treatment, she ensures that we understand our scope of practice, which allows patients to have the best outcomes. Looking forward to doing more BOSS courses in the future!

  • I just attended the 2018 Boss Course 1 in Melbourne. It was a comprehensive introduction into orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. I have walked away feeling confident in my knowledge and abilities. I recommend this course to beginners and those with more experience. The group was small and the course felt tailored to our individual levels of experience. Dr Katyal was so kind and approachable and generously shared her knowledge. The course was heavily scientifically based and Dr Katyal frequently referred to the literature and gave recommended pre-readings to enhance our knowledge and make the most of the session.

  • Dr Katyal shares so much of her own protocol and is extremely generous not only with her time but with the well thought out information she provides along with the course such as inventory lists, marketing material and case presentation templates. She tailors her advice to your own experience and helps with appropriate case selection, points out possible pitfalls and helps you understand how to overcome them. The course is also up-to-date using the latest technologies in orthodontics and is heavily evidence-based.

I would recommend it to anyone wanting to start doing some orthodontic treatment or looking for a more comprehensive course to assist in some ortho they are already doing.
